Use Jam Jar Tongs for Safe Lifting of Perserves
Jam jar tongs are designed so that you can lift your hot jam jars from the boiling water or oven safely without burning yourself or touching the glass.
They are great for when you are sterilising your jars using water. I admit I have a bit of trouble using tongs as in order to use them you have to go in from above. This doesn’t work out too well for me as I have an old cooker and I sterilize in the cooker. To lift from above I need to pull out the tray which then slips at an angle sending all my jars flying.
But for those of you with safe cookers this method works a treat and is much safer than using a cloth.
What Makes a Great Tong?
- They need to be resistant to any heat.
- They have to be fairly strong, you don’t want them breaking when you are transporting your jam jars.
- They stop you burning your fingers (which I have done numerous times)
- They must be designed especially for the task.

I think this is vitally important as although there are times when you can make do it is better where hot glass is involved to use the right equipment if you can.
If you look carefully at a pair of Jam jar tongs you can see where they are designed with a jar in mind.
The tough, heatproof seal safely grips the jar while you squeeze them shut at the other end creating a secure grip.
The coated frame protects your hand and keeps it away from any heat source.
I also think that those of us with tiny hands might struggle a bit. I have difficulty getting my hands around the gap enough to get a firm hold. My hand length is approx 6-7 inches long.
These tongs from Kilner are great jar lifters. With them you can lift out your jars from boiling water safely and with ease. Also, keeping your hands away from all the scolding water. No more messing around with tea towels or clumsy oven gloves.
They are really strong and also heat resistant and long lasting.
