How to Make an Easy Tasty Sloe Gin Recipe. Making Sloe gin is easy to do and has great results. I first discovered sloe gin a few Christmases ago when my sister made me some. It tasted so great that I decided to make my own recipe. This proved problematic as the supermarkets and local markets did not sell them. Very frustrating. so where can you get them from? Remember to leave some berries for nature. Grow Your Own You can, of course, get the bushes and grow your own if you are having difficulty in finding them or don't want to used dried fruits. Why Don't the Shops Sell Them? They are extremely acidic and tart so not very nice to eat most of the time. The plant they come from is the blackthorn bush. This is a prunus genus and this range like many others contain hydrogen cyanide which is a toxin. It is not a big deal as many nuts and fruits etc do have small amounts of this in them. Also, I found out recently that you can actually use different alcohol for these so sloe vodka etc. I haven't tried it yet but apparently whatever is available.
